Owner/Lead Vocal Instructor/Director

Kris Huston

Kris is the co-founder and owner of HSMT. With over 25 years of experience as a worship and music director, teacher and performer, Kris holds an M.A. in Theology and degrees in both Music and Theater from Concordia University Irvine. She manages and directs HSMT while raising her 3 boys who are also active in performing arts. Kris and her husband, Dru, recorded multiple albums and ran their own tours before taking full-time music jobs. Along with directing shows, teaching classes, and running two Musical Theater competition groups, Kris also teaches Voice, Acting, Musical Theater, Beginning Piano, Audition Coaching and Worship Band at HSMT.

Carolynn Schmahl

Carolynn fell in love with music at the age of twelve when a happy scheduling accident landed her in choir. There, she learned the joy and complexity of the performing arts from a passionate and talented director who inspired her to ignite that same love for the arts in young people by becoming an educator herself. A graduate from Chapman University’s Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music, Carolynn is a classically trained vocalist with a diverse background in opera, jazz, musical theatre, and pop music. While at Chapman she had the privilege of participating in ‘American Celebration’ where she sang as a featured soloist. Additionally, she was a frequent soloist during her time as a member with the institution’s touring choir, the University Singers. Having taught at Huston School of Music and Theatre since 2015, Carolynn looks forward to a future of teaching and performance.

Katie Perry

Katie Perry is a professional actress, singer, dancer, and teacher. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from the University of Oklahoma, and is an Orange County School of the Arts musical theatre alum. She has performed all over the country, and a few of her recent credits include: Newsies (Katherine u/s, Ensemble), & South Pacific (Ensemble) at La Mirada Theatre with McCoy Rigby Entertainment, Beth in Little Women with The Barn Stage Company, Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance with Shakespeare Orange County, Belle in Beauty and the Beast with Musical Theatre Orange County, Ensemble in The Wizard of Oz with the Candlelight Pavilion, and Miss Dorothy in Thoroughly Modern Millie with Broadway Rose Theatre. She has also appeared at 54 Below in New York City in Bartram and Hill’s new musical, The Theory of Relativity and as a featured soloist with Susan Egan in her concert, The Belle of Broadway.

At Huston School of Music and Theatre, Katie teaches private voice, acting, piano, and dance, the Musical Theatre Minis dance/vocal combo class, provides audition coaching, and often choreographs and music directs for various HSMT productions and groups. Katie also teaches a Musical Theatre audition technique class at Orange County School of the Arts. Katie is very active in performing, choreographing, and music directing for many local productions. Voice

Mark Peng

Mark started his lifelong musical journey in the Bay Area, when he joined the Ragazzi Boy’s Chorus at age seven. He eventually ended up in Southern California, where he graduated from Chapman University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Performance summa cum laude. Mark has performed a wide variety of styles that range from Moonface Martin in Anything Goes, Caldwell B. Cladwell in Urinetown, to Antonio in Le Nozze di Figaro and Betto in Gianni Schicchi. His collaborations with OCYSO, the Chapman Orchestra, and Pacific Symphony has led him to perform in venues such as the Musco Center and Segerstrom Concert Hall. An active performer and teacher, Mark also works as a musical director. Mark strives for ​all ​ his students to develop a lasting love and passion for music.

Dru Huston

Dru Huston is not only the co-founder and owner of HSMT but is also the drum and percussion teacher. Dru studied music at the prestigious Chapman University School of Music and has a diverse background in classical and modern percussion and drums. He has extensive knowledge of percussive instruments in both the live and studio settings. He also leads various tasks at HSMT including set design, costume design, sound engineering and writing drum & percussion composing.

Evan Haymond

Evan Haymond began touring professionally as a guitarist when he was 18 years old. After several years on the road with various national acts, he decided to focus his attention on studio guitar playing and music composition. Evan currently writes and performs music for the hit show “American Pickers” on History Channel. His other credits include Disney Channel’s “Bunk’d”, various programs and releases from E! Entertainment Television, Oxygen Network, and Walt Disney Records. Along with working in the music industry, Evan has always had a passion for music education. He believes that theoretical music knowledge and being provided the opportunity for performance experience is crucial to a music student’s development. Evan is committed to providing his students with a well-rounded musical education.

Heather Moore

Heather is an active pianist in Orange County. She recently graduated with honors from the Chapman University Conservatory of Music, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance. Heather has experience with many different musical styles and performance settings, including jazz, blues, worship, theater, and classical, and has performed both locally and internationally. She loves working with kids and plans to pursue a full-time career in music instruction and performance.

Christine Abraham

Christine is a native of Pennsylvania and recently finished the National Tour of MY FAIR LADY, produced by Cameron MacKintosh. In addition to being a successful stage and T.V. actress she also has several choreographic credits to her name, mounting such shows as CRAZY FOR YOU, WEST SIDE STORY, THE WORLD GOES ROUND, and CABARET, to name a few. She has just added her newest title, mom, on December 6th of 2009 to a beautiful baby boy, Cole Joseph Abraham.

Jessica Ordaz

Jessica has always had a heart for choreography and worked 5 years as a director/choreographer for youth and young adult theatre across LA and Orange Counties. Jessica has been performing professionally since 1999, with companies such as The Candlelight Pavilion, McCoyRigby Entertainment and 3D Theatricals! Other theatrical credits include: Olive Ostrovsky, Tracy Turnblad, Millie (Thoroughly Modern Millie), Maria (Sound of Music), Belle, Baker’s Wife & Rizzo. Shannon Steen

Shannon is a former Los Angeles Laker Girl and currently the choreographer of the Nickelodeon children’s show “Mutt’n’ Stuff”. She is also the choreographer for the children’s television series and touring stage shows for “Yo Gabba Gabba”. She has been performing and choreographing for many years and has several film/TV credits. She also teaches technique to several Orange County high schools and studios and is the coach of El Dorado’s award winning dance team in Placentia. She loves working with kids and sharing her passion for dance and she is excited to be a part of Huston School Of Music and Theater.

Carla Hutchison

Carla started her dance training at 3 where she studied at the Kindorf Dance Studio in Cerritos now known as “Impact Dance”.  After being picked up by a talent agency at a dance competition at age 5 she began to work professionally.  Her professional dance credits include the First Star Search Junior, The People’s choice awards, Kids Incorporated, “TAP” with Gregory Hines and Savion Glover, a Tribute to Michael Jackson, along with numerous National commercials.  She continued her dance training and education at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, auditioned and was accepted at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York City and has studied with renowned master teacher Paula Morgan. Her teaching career started at age 15 where her students ranged from adults to 3 year olds
